How Atlanta became the defining chapter in Lenny Wilkens’ storied NBA journey

As someone who relocated to Atlanta during the summer of 1996, I became an Atlanta Hawks fan by watching the games of Mookie Blaylock, Steve Smith, Dikembe Mutombo, and Christian Laettner. I used to enjoythese guys play, but more importantly, I enjoyd seeing Lenny Wilkins lead them as the Atlanta Hawks head coach. Wilkins was a legend whose time in Atlanta stands as the highlight of an extraordinary basketball life.

Wilkens walked into Atlanta in the summer of 1993, bringing not just an already Hall of Fame résumé, but a deep, calm wisdom that transformed our franchise and our city. He led us instantly to a franchise-best 57 wins that first year, a season marked by discipline, trust, and relentless belief in each other. He knew how to bring the best out of everyone, from established stars to new faces, and was never rattled, even during the greatest challenges.

Atlanta became more than just another stop in a legendary journey; it was a home where Wilkens set a standard of excellence and integrity that changed the Hawks forever. Under his leadership, we made six straight playoff runs, celebrated three 50-win seasons, and, most of all, learned how to compete with dignity and heart. Winning was important to Wilins, but teaching life through basketball, that was his true calling. He taught us to believe, to outwork, and to outlast. When he passed Red Auerbach in 1995 to become the all-time wins leader, he made history, but he never made it about himself. It was always about the team, the city, and those who cheered us on night after night.

Atlanta’s basketball spirit still carries his fingerprints, his calm during chaos, his wisdom during tight fourth quarters, and his great laugh after long practices. He embodied grace and dedication, set a blueprint for future generations, and showed Atlanta what it means to lead and serve. We mourn his loss, but we celebrate every lesson, every victory, and every quiet act of kindness he shared with our city.

Rest in peace, Lenny Wilkens. Atlanta was, and will always be, better because you called it home.
