SPORTS FOES | WNBA FINALS

Born with Cali tags and raised with Southern swag, I have always dreamed of a special basketball matchup. I wanted to see my hometown Golden State Warriors face my adopted hometown Atlanta Hawks in the NBA Finals. Both cities have shaped my identity and fueled my love for basketball. Now, that dream has finally come true, although with an exciting twist.

Instead of the Warriors and Hawks, the women are taking center court. The Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream will compete for the 2026 WNBA championship. Their best-of-seven series begins Saturday, October 17, at San Francisco’s Chase Center. Both franchises are seeking their first championship, making the matchup particularly meaningful.

For Golden State, the series offers a chance to complete a remarkable rise in only two seasons. Meanwhile, Atlanta hopes to capture a championship that has eluded the franchise since 2008. Beyond the competition, the matchup highlights the growing popularity of women’s basketball. It also brings together two cities with passionate sports traditions.

Golden State’s Remarkable Rise

The Golden State Valkyries have quickly established themselves as one of the WNBA’s most exciting franchises. Playing at Chase Center, home of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, the team has attracted enthusiastic crowds. The Valkyries reached the playoffs during their inaugural 2025 season. Their early success demonstrated the Bay Area’s strong appetite for women’s professional basketball.

Golden State continued building momentum in 2026 under head coach Natalie Nakase. The Valkyries finished the regular season as the No. 2 playoff seed. They defeated the Dallas Wings in the opening round before sweeping the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in the semifinals. Those victories secured the franchise’s first WNBA Finals appearance.

According to the Valkyries’ official announcement, Golden State became the first WNBA expansion franchise to reach the Finals in its second season. Gabby Williams and her teammates have built their success around strong defense and balanced scoring. Their teamwork has helped transform a young franchise into a serious championship contender.

For Bay Area fans, the Valkyries offer another opportunity to celebrate basketball excellence. The Warriors have already established a championship tradition through Stephen Curry and his teammates. Now, the region’s newest professional basketball team hopes to create a winning legacy of its own.

Atlanta’s Long-Awaited Championship Opportunity

Across the country, the Atlanta Dream are pursuing a championship nearly two decades in the making. The franchise previously reached the WNBA Finals in 2010, 2011 and 2013. However, each appearance ended without a title. This season, Atlanta returns with another opportunity to make franchise history.

The Dream feature a talented roster led by Rhyne Howard, Allisha Gray, Jordin Canada and Angel Reese. Their combination of scoring, defense and rebounding has made Atlanta a formidable opponent. Reese earned the league’s 2026 Defensive Player of the Year honor, strengthening the team’s defensive identity.

Atlanta entered the playoffs as the No. 4 seed but quickly exceeded expectations. The Dream swept the Washington Mystics in the opening round. They followed that performance by eliminating the New York Liberty in three straight semifinal games. As a result, Atlanta enters the championship series without a postseason loss.

The Dream’s success has created excitement throughout Georgia. Atlanta fans have waited years for another opportunity to compete for a WNBA championship. Now, the franchise has a chance to reward that loyalty with its first title.

Sellout Crowds Highlight the WNBA’s Popularity

The growing demand for WNBA tickets has become a major storyline surrounding this championship series. Golden State has developed a reputation for filling Chase Center, which holds approximately 18,000 basketball fans. During its inaugural season, the franchise sold out every home game. Those crowds helped establish the Valkyries as one of the league’s strongest attendance attractions.

Additional games will take place if neither team has secured four victories.

Tickets and Broadcast Information

Fans can purchase championship tickets through the teams’ official websites and authorized ticketing services. Golden State began offering Finals tickets on October 12. Meanwhile, Atlanta’s State Farm Arena presale begins October 15, followed by general ticket sales on October 16.

Ticket prices will vary depending on seating location and demand. Fans should compare official listings before purchasing from resale marketplaces. Additional information is available through the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries websites.

National television coverage will include NBC, USA Network and CNBC, with streaming available through Peacock. Consequently, supporters who cannot attend in person will have several opportunities to follow the championship.

Defense Could Decide the Championship

Both teams have built their success around strong defense and disciplined play. Golden State finished the regular season with the WNBA’s best defensive rating. Atlanta also ranked among the league’s strongest defensive teams. Therefore, rebounding, turnovers and late-game execution could determine the winner.

Golden State won all three regular-season meetings against Atlanta. However, the teams have not faced each other since July 4. Atlanta’s undefeated postseason performance suggests the Dream have improved considerably since their last meeting. The earlier results may offer Golden State confidence, but they do not guarantee another victory.

Gabby Williams has played an important role in Golden State’s postseason success. Her scoring, playmaking and defensive versatility provide the Valkyries with several advantages. Atlanta will counter with Reese’s rebounding and defense, along with scoring contributions from Howard, Gray and Canada.

Player health could also influence the championship. Gray suffered a hand injury during the semifinals, making her availability an important concern for Atlanta. Both coaching staffs will need to make adjustments throughout the series.

Women’s Basketball Continues to Grow

The 2026 WNBA Finals arrive during a period of increasing national interest in women’s professional basketball. Growing attendance, television exposure and corporate investment have expanded the league’s visibility. New franchises have also introduced the sport to additional markets and audiences.

Golden State’s success demonstrates how quickly an expansion franchise can build a competitive team and loyal fan base. Meanwhile, Atlanta’s return to the Finals highlights the opportunities available to established organizations. Together, the teams represent different paths toward championship success.

The decision to move Atlanta’s championship games to State Farm Arena also reflects the sport’s progress. Larger crowds require expanded facilities and greater coordination among professional sports organizations. By accommodating more spectators, the league and its partners are responding to growing demand.

From the Bay to the A, This One Is Personal

For many basketball fans, the championship series represents an exciting contest between two talented teams. However, for those with strong connections to California and Georgia, the matchup carries additional meaning. Golden State and Atlanta are separated by thousands of miles, yet both regions have helped shape American sports, music and culture.

For someone born with California roots and raised with Southern swagger, choosing between the teams is no easy task. The Warriors-Hawks NBA Finals matchup I once imagined never materialized. Instead, the Valkyries and Dream have delivered a championship showdown that feels just as meaningful.

Golden State hopes to complete an extraordinary journey from expansion franchise to champion in only two seasons. Atlanta wants to end nearly two decades of waiting and bring home its first WNBA title. Each team has an opportunity to make history while giving its supporters a championship celebration.

Regardless of the outcome, this series will produce a first-time WNBA champion. It will also mark another milestone for women’s professional basketball. For fans with loyalties spanning both regions, the championship offers a rare chance to celebrate two places they proudly call home.

From the Bay to the A, the championship dream is finally alive.
