Grass ain’t greener on Washington’s side

Deebo Samuel returns to the San Francisco 49ers after a stint in Washington, bringing a familiar playmaker back to the Bay Area.

The San Francisco 49ers have officially brought back familiar face Deebo Samuel on a one-year contract worth up to $7 million.

Samuel originally starred for the 49ers from 2019 to 2024, helping the franchise reach two Super Bowls. However, after multiple instances of friction, including requesting a trade during contract disputes, he was ultimately dealt to the Washington Commanders ahead of the 2025 campaign.

After spending a year away in the nation’s capital, where he recorded 727 receiving yards and five touchdowns, Samuel discovered that the grass wasn’t quite as green on the other side. With a reunion bringing him back to the Bay Area, he slots back into Kyle Shanahan’s offense to help stabilize a 49ers wide receiver room currently navigating injuries and roster changes.
